2010 CVAL Design Competition

The CVAL Design Competition, celebrating it's 11th anniversary, will once again be the centerpiece of the 2010 Fresno Home and Garden Show. The venue is located in the larger Landscape Pavilion (Bldg. #9), south end of the fairgrounds near the Butler ticket gate.
When attendees first arrive at the Home Show, they are invited to enjoy to-scale backyard landscape vignettes, offered by the best of the local landscape design industry. What is not immediately apparent is the week of non-stop, back-breaking work that took place prior to the show; the license qualifications that had to be met; and the $11,000 in prize money that is at stake. Then comes the judging! All entries are reviewed and critiqued by a select panel of qualified judges.

NORGARD LANDSCAPING AND WATERGARDENS (Lic. # 511031)

Urbano Hernandez, owner of Magic Touch Landscape, is teaming up with Mariette Olsen with Olsen Consulting this year. Urbano has always been interested and involved in the landscape industry. JUDGES
We are very pleased to have such a distinguished group of professionals judging this year's CVAL Design Competition. Now in its 11th year, the feature has become one of the most anticipated venues at the Home Show, so we thought it befitting to have judges that reflect the competition's status.
* Robert Boro, American Society of Landscape Architects - Robert has been a Landscape Architect since 1975, employing a staff of qualified professionals. In 32 years, he's completed a wide variety of projects, including well over 1,000 landscapes! We are very please to have him back as a CVAL judge.
* Lee Duckering, American Society of Landscape Architects - Lee graduated in 1977 from Cal Poly, and acquired his California licensure in 1979. He soon formed The Duckering Group. He has won several major industry awards and has appeared in Sunset Magazine. A perfect judge for our competition.
* Bob Truxell and John Valentino, Professional Landscapers - Both Bob and John head up Truxell & Valentino Landscape Development, Inc., a well respected local company. Their projects have attracted national press, including an article in Sunset Magazine about an entry courtyard they completed a couple of years ago.
* 
Ron Nishinaka, Tree Fresno - After 37 years of teaching, Ron has retired from Reedley College and has joined the staff of Tree Fresno as Project Director. His new position includes horticulture, education, and working with the community – a perfect match for this consummate professional. Tree Fresno is a non-profit organization whose mission is to enrich the quality of life in the Fresno region with the addition of trees and trails. To date, Tree Fresno has planted over 36,500 trees. In September, 2010, they will be celebrating their 25th anniversary.
